Rev. George Smailes (1862 – ) minister and Member of NSW Legislative Assembly
George Wells Smailes was Methodist Minister in a strong Methodist area of Granville. He was the Member for Granville in the NSW Legislative Assembly from 1894 to 1898.
George Wells Smailes was born in Durham, England, 1 Jan 1862.
He commenced work in mines at age 10.
He studied at night to become a Primitive Methodist Minister.
He arrived in New South Wales in 1882; held charge at Lithgow; moved to Sydney in 1891 becoming a Minister in a strong Methodist area of Granville.
He was the Member for Granville in the NSW Legislative Assembly from 1894 to 1898.
He retired from politics in 1898 to concentrate on clerical duties.

The Reverend George Wells Smailes of Harris Park, Pastor of the Primitive Methodist Church, Parramatta, won the seat of Granville for the Labor Electoral League in the general election of 1894, retained it in a general election a year later, but did not contest the 1898 election.
